THE GUARD STORY

“The National Guard is one of the best connections between the armed forces and the public,” said Secretary of Defense Gates at a recent gathering of Department of Defense Leaders.  Never has this been more important than now as the Army National Guard fulfills its community and national defense missions.  Whether it’s filling sandbags in a desperate attempt to stop raging flood waters in North Dakota or standing a lonely watch on the frontiers of America’s battle to build and defend fragile democracies.

The very first “volunteer army” the Guard, from its beginning as a small force in the Massachusetts Colonies has always been there to support their communities, defend the nation and protect American interest in times of peace at home and peril in far away lands. The support of America’s citizens for the Guard is essential to maintaining the Guard’s ability to respond to a crisis no matter the location.
